CHAPTER TWELVE

Lisandra

LISANDRA WATCHED MALACHI walk away. Unless she was wrong his long stride was more rapid than usual. Yep. She hadn’t been mistaken. He had wanted to kiss her and was stepping away fast from that idea.

Obviously, the thought horrified him, though she wasn’t sure why. It certainly should have horrified her, but it didn’t. The emotion she was feeling was more along the lines of disappointment that he hadn’t followed his instincts.

What would it be like to be kissed by a man other than Richard? She’d really had too few boyfriends to have experience with this. And she certainly hadn’t expected to even want the intimacy of kissing to be on her agenda only seven weeks after giving birth. Three years more likely.

But this was Malachi. It wasn’t as if she hadn’t noticed his wide chest, strong abs under his shirt, or watched him run powerfully along the beach paths. The man was a machine. She’d been awake in the early mornings more than a few times, sitting on the balcony, and enjoyed the sight while the boys fed.

What would it be like to be kissed by big, beautiful, kindness-personified, old-fashioned Malachi? Something stirred, deep and warm inside her, and she knew she’d been avoiding these thoughts.

Would his kiss be chaste? Perhaps not after the heat she’d seen in his eyes tonight. Would it be awkward, because sometimes she felt his awkwardness? Or would the connection she felt between them more each time he came to visit her carry them into a deeper, dangerous connection. Dangerous because she was dreaming if she thought there was a future between them.

She knew there was no future. Knew the time would come. The looming sense of loss when she had to move away and out of his life. She could just imagine his grandmother’s horror that the little midwife tenant he’d invited into his home had been invited into his bed.

Crikey. Who could think of sex with all the floppy tummy and breastfeeding involved? She gave a huff of amusement at the possibility of them actually being able to get to bed, without one or the other of the boys disturbing them. But this type of thought was a concern. Yep, she was starting to fantasise about her landlord. It was time to go. To make new plans. She’d had enough pain.

She needed to get Ginny onto finding her new for-ever home. She suspected Ginny, Malachi’s secretary first before her friend, she reminded herself, had gone slow on Lisandra moving out.

She looked down at the baby between her hands and saw that he’d been fully dressed on autopilot. ‘Sorry, Bennett. I wasn’t paying attention to you. Bad Mummy.’ And that was another reason she needed to not think silly, girly thoughts about a prince of a man who was only being kind. Full focus needed to be on her sons, her fatherless sons who needed their mother’s undivided attention.

She carried Bennett across to the lounge and wedged him behind the pillow while she scooped Bastian from the pram.
